Objectives Versus Goals

A friend of mine recently reminded me that we should not set goals as much as we set our objectives. “Huh?” you might ask. Well an objective is a must have mission while a goal is kind of a wish. I  must have a healthy body and feel good about myself so that is my objective. One of my goals is to be able to do 10 pullups and since that has been a goal for a while now, I have yet to achieve it. If it was my objective, things would be different.

Think about the last time you went house or apartment shopping. Did you have ‘must haves’ and ‘wish list’ or would be nice to have items? I know I did and when price and location crept into the picture, my wish list items became a lot less important and I settled for the ‘must haves’. Treat your  health and body the same way. What is really important to you?  Create your “must haves’ objectives for your health. Don’t let social pressure influence you. Decide what you really want and draw a line in the sand, make it your objective and you will find a way.

Call me if you need help reaching those objectives!

That’s a very interesting approach to the differences between objectives and goals.

I personally face goals as must-haves and don’t stop until I achieve them. Sometimes it takes longer than I would wish but that’s when perseverance comes along.

Keeping in mind why that objective is so important to me helps me overcome any obstacles that show up.

I believe that’s what you’re talking about. Am I right?

      Hi Eliane,

I like your unstoppable attitude about your goals! It is true that if you don’t give up on a goal then you can never fail. My point was that if it’s your objective, then it is your mission statement, your defining mission and it no longer is a goal that can be dropped, discarded or put on the  back burner. So yes, I agree with you. Thanks for your comments!
