HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TRYING TO REACH YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS WITHOUT WEIGHT TRAINING? BY PATRICIA

Resistance training is essential for anyone trying to lose weight and should be integrated as part of everyone’s healthy lifestyle. The resistance can be body weight resistance (think pushups, abdominal crunches, etc.) or weight machines and free weights or all three ideally. They help you build muscle and bone tissue (see An IRA For Your Bones? Why Women and Men Should Weight Train). Doctors are finally agreeing and recommending resistance training to their patients. But some people still resist the idea.

I have heard a lot of women say that they don’t weight train because they don’t want to build muscle and get “bulky”. This makes me smile, reminding me that long before I was a trainer but not so long ago, in the 1970s I believe, the prevailing school of thought was that women should not lift weights. My simplest response to that is, “I weight train all the time, do I look bulky to you?” That usually gets them thinking.

“How long have you been trying to reach your goals without weight training?” Is my typical follow-up question.

The truth is that the more muscle that you have, the shapelier your body will be and the more calories you burn all the time – even while at rest. Having muscles ramps up your metabolism! Of course you should still eat a health promoting diet as well. Personal Trainers, like our wonderful trainers at ALL Bodies Fitness, can help you learn to and get into the habit of doing both. Let’s get you healthy together – you don’t have to do it alone.

What a great title. I think this applies to a lot of people trying to lose weight. We have all been told that weight lifting is “where it’s at”…but so few of us pursue it seriously. And yes, there’s definitely be bias among women that you mentioned, how we don’t want to be seen as bulky, that we’d rather have lean muscle. But we do have to think about how much easier dieting will be if more of our body’s tissues are actively involved in burning fat. thanks for the info
